GCS third quarter 2011-2012 honor rolls

The following students in the Guilford County Schools have achieved academic distinction for the third quarter and are included on the school system's "A Team."

Students in grades nine through 12 who received a 4.0 or better grade point average during the third nine-week grading period qualify for the "A Team."

GREENSBORO - A police officer pursuing a motorcyclist that had been driving recklessly crashed into a car occupied by a woman and her 8-month-old child, police said this morning.

Troyanna Jamison and the child were taken to Moses Cone Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to police.

Robbery, attempted robbery reported at two Greensboro homes

GREENSBORO — A robbery and an attempted robbery occurred at two Greensboro homes early this morning, police said.

In the first incident, Alden Woods and Alissa Cobb told officers three men armed with handguns broke into their home at 3211 Lardner Road.

They took an undisclosed amount of money and property from the victims before fleeing, police said.

NASCAR partners with Twitter for live events

CONCORD — NASCAR has created a partnership with Twitter that makes it the first sports organization to create an enhanced live event experience on the social media platform.

The partnership will begin before the June 10 race at Pocono. Fans will be able to use the hashtag #NASCAR to find relevant tweets from drivers, teams, commentators and other celebrities.

Police: Man sought after opening fire on Winston-Salem home

WINSTON-SALEM — A man is being sought after he fired gunshots at a home early this morning at 602 Voss St. that was occupied by five people, striking it multiple times, police said.

There were no injuries.

Two of the victims saw the man shooting and knew him by the nickname JD, police said.

Police described him as black, 20 years old and having a slender build.

$306,000 worth of marijuana seized in Mayodan

MAYODAN — Sheriff's detectives Thursday seized 255 marijuana plants growing in a wooded area with an estimated street value of $306,000.

The plants were found near Park Road and N.C. 770 in Mayodan, according to the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office.

No charges had been filed as of Friday afternoon.

N.C. unemployment rate continues slow decline

RALEIGH (AP) — North Carolina's unemployment rate has fallen to 9.4 percent, continuing a slow decline that began almost a year ago.

The state Division of Labor and Economic Analysis on Friday released the unemployment figures for April, showing the rate fell from 9.7 percent a month earlier and 10.4 percent from April 2011.
